William: Barred Owl

William, the Barred Owl (Strix Varia). He was injured in November of 2009 in an accident with a car. Will experienced trauma to his left eye, which was then surgically removed. This Barred Owl is part of our Education Team and he travels to several programs every year with the volunteers at the WVRRC. When the volunteers go into his flight cage to jess and leash him for a program, they are greeted with beak clacks and he will puff up to try to scare us off.

Barred Owls are also known as Hoot Owls and are considered a large owl. Their hoots sound like "Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you-all?" These owls would prefer to live in areas with large groups of trees. They will live in nest boxes but will also use tree cavities or previous crow’s nests. Barred Owls weigh around 1.5-1.8 pounds, depending on the sex of the bird. Their height is about 17-24 inches tall and they have a wingspan of up to 43 inches.
